Japan in autumn is not simply a destination: it is a season, an atmosphere, a feeling that changes from one street to the next. For a few weeks each year, temples disappear beneath glowing maple trees, mountain forests turn deep red and gold, and entire cities seem to slow down under softer light and colder evenings. This journey has been designed around that precise moment.
We will begin in Tokyo, where the energy of the city reveals itself gradually: quiet mornings in traditional neighbourhoods, hidden bars behind glowing lanterns, contemporary architecture, ancient shrines and the first autumn colours appearing in the parks of the capital. Rather than rushing through endless districts and attractions, we will experience Tokyo through rhythm, contrast and atmosphere.
From there, the journey moves into the Japanese Alps. Traveling by train through mountains and forests, we will arrive in Takayama, a small historic town where the pace changes completely. Here, traditional wooden streets, local markets and warm interiors replace the intensity of the city. We will stay in a traditional ryokan with onsen baths, enjoying one of the most authentic and memorable experiences of the trip. Autumn in the mountains of Japan feels quieter, deeper and more intimate — exactly the way we want to experience it.
Crossing the countryside through Shirakawa-go, we will continue toward Kanazawa, one of Japan’s most refined cultural cities. Samurai districts, geisha neighbourhoods and elegant gardens create a different side of Japan: sophisticated, artistic and deeply connected to its past.
The heart of the journey will be Kyoto during the foliage season. Rather than trying to “see everything,” we will allow ourselves the time to truly experience the city: early mornings among temples and autumn leaves, evenings in illuminated gardens, tea houses, hidden alleys, slow walks through Gion and quieter moments away from the crowds. Kyoto in late November is not simply beautiful, it is cinematic.
One day will be dedicated to Nara, where sacred deer wander freely through parks and ancient temples surrounded by autumn colours. The atmosphere here is calmer and softer, offering a perfect contrast to Kyoto. Finally, the journey will end in Osaka with a different energy: vibrant streets, small izakaya, local street food and one last evening together before returning home.
This is not a fast-paced tour of Japan: it is a carefully curated autumn journey designed for travellers who value atmosphere, balance, authenticity and meaningful experiences over checklists and speed.
Arrival in Tokyo and independent transfer to our hotel in Asakusa, one of the city’s most atmospheric and traditional neighbourhoods.
After check-in, we’ll begin easing into the rhythm of Japan with a relaxed evening walk through illuminated streets, small alleys and the area around Senso-ji Temple. The first evening is intentionally slow — a chance to settle in, recover from the flight and enjoy the atmosphere of Tokyo at night.
Our first full day in Tokyo begins with the autumn colors of Shinjuku Gyoen, one of the city’s most beautiful gardens during foliage season.
From there, we’ll explore a different side of Tokyo through quieter and more refined districts such as Daikanyama and Omotesando, balancing contemporary architecture, cafés, local boutiques and hidden corners of the city.
In the evening, Tokyo reveals another side of itself through lantern-lit alleys, izakaya and small cocktail bars tucked away behind the main streets.
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll head to Tsukiji Outer Market, where the group will have time to explore one of Tokyo’s most iconic food districts through sushi counters, seafood stalls and small local specialties.
Later in the day, we’ll visit Meiji Shrine, hidden within a large forest in the center of the city — a completely different atmosphere from the energy of Tokyo’s streets.
The afternoon remains intentionally flexible, leaving space for personal exploration, shopping, photography, museums or simply slowing down and enjoying the city at your own pace.
Leaving Tokyo behind, we’ll travel into the Japanese Alps by train.
After reaching Nagoya by Shinkansen — with the possibility of seeing Mount Fuji along the way — we’ll continue aboard the scenic Hida Limited Express through rivers, forests and mountain landscapes covered in autumn colours.
By the afternoon we’ll arrive in Takayama and settle into our traditional ryokan with onsen baths.
The rest of the day is dedicated to slowing down completely: hot springs, silence, mountain air and a traditional kaiseki dinner.
Today is dedicated to experiencing a quieter and more intimate side of Japan.
We’ll explore Takayama’s historic streets and morning markets before enjoying a local Hida beef culinary experience, deeply connected to the traditions of the region.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum of traditional rural houses surrounded by autumn foliage and mountain landscapes.
The evening brings us back to the warmth of the ryokan for another onsen experience and a relaxed dinner.
Traveling by private transfer through the mountains, we’ll stop in Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO-listed village famous for its traditional farmhouses and peaceful alpine atmosphere.
Rather than rushing through, we’ll take time to walk through the village, enjoy the scenery and stop for lunch before continuing toward Kanazawa.
In the evening, we’ll explore the elegant atmosphere of Higashi Chaya District, one of Japan’s best-preserved geisha neighborhoods.
The morning begins at Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, especially during autumn.
Afterward, we’ll continue to Kyoto by train and settle into the city that will become the emotional center of the journey.
The first evening in Kyoto is dedicated to atmosphere rather than sightseeing: quiet streets, lanterns, traditional wooden houses and the timeless beauty of Gion and Pontocho after sunset.
Today we experience Kyoto’s iconic side at the height of the foliage season.
Starting early in Arashiyama before the crowds arrive, we’ll move through temple gardens, narrow streets and hillside paths framed by red and golden leaves.
The afternoon is dedicated to the historic districts around Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama, while the evening may include one of Kyoto’s famous autumn illuminations.
After the intensity of the previous day, today slows down.
This is a more intimate Kyoto made of tea houses, quieter temples, zen gardens, hidden alleys and moments designed simply to absorb the atmosphere of the city.
Some experiences may include a traditional tea ceremony, historical residences and free time for personal exploration.
In the evening, Kyoto reveals its quieter elegance through softly illuminated streets, jazz bars, cafés and small restaurants.
Today we leave Kyoto temporarily behind and head to Nara by public train.
Sacred deer wander freely through large parks filled with autumn colours, while ancient temples emerge between forests and open spaces.
The pace remains relaxed throughout the day, allowing time for walking, photography, local food and quiet moments before returning to Kyoto in the afternoon.
After a final slow morning in Kyoto, we’ll continue to Osaka for the last evening of the journey.
Osaka brings a completely different energy: brighter, louder and more playful. The night will be dedicated to local street food, izakaya culture and the vibrant atmosphere of the city’s nightlife districts.
A final shared evening before returning home.
Breakfast and individual departures from Osaka. End of the journey.
