China can feel overwhelming on a first visit. This journey is built in three chapters, each with its own rhythm, so that the icons you came to see, the places you settle into and the surprises you never expected each get room to breathe.
Chapter one is Beijing, the China you came to see. We start gently, with a light first day, then follow the old-city hutongs towards the Forbidden City on a route inspired by the Qing-era officials' commute to court. A pedal rickshaw is always available if anyone wants a break. We spend a morning at the Temple of Heaven among residents walking and exercising, learn a few Mandarin phrases to try out at a local market, and share a classic roast-duck dinner. Then we leave the city for the Great Wall near Gubeikou, with time to walk, pause and take in the landscape. We spend the night in a courtyard-style guesthouse, make dumplings together and begin the next morning with a gentle Tai Chi session. Back in Beijing, a Chinese massage is the right reward.
Chapter two is Sichuan, where the pace slows. After a flight to Chengdu, we explore contemporary life around Taikoo Li and the older Daci Temple, then choose one evening experience that suits the group: Sichuan opera, mahjong in a teahouse or a cooking lesson. We meet the giant pandas early, when they are most active, and visit Dujiangyan, an ancient water-control system still part of local life. Two unhurried nights near Qingcheng Mountain follow, with forest paths, Taoist heritage and tea. Before leaving Sichuan, you try a small part of a living craft, Shu embroidery or lacquer and mother-of-pearl, with a maker who practises it every day.
Chapter three is Chongqing. We travel by high-speed train to this vertical city of hills, stairways, cable cars and river crossings, and discover it at human scale, with seated breaks along the way. One evening brings a private cultural performance in an atmospheric heritage setting. On the last full day we explore the city's neighbourhoods and markets, relax in a hot spring and share a farewell dinner. The journey ends in Chongqing on Saturday 24 April.
Along the way you stay in comfortable, well-located hotels with local character, and daily breakfast is always included. The activity level is moderate, with some steps and slopes, and the Great Wall and Qingcheng walks can be shortened to suit the group.

Itinerary
Beijing
Arrive without rushing. Arrival transfer to your hotel in the old city. The day is deliberately light: rest, an easy neighbourhood walk if you have energy, and a first meeting with your Teekonda host and local team.
Beijing
From the Minister's commute to the Forbidden City. Start near Shichahai's historic mansion quarter and walk the old-city hutongs towards the imperial heart of Beijing, with a rickshaw alternative if anyone needs a break. Continue to the Tiananmen area and the Forbidden City. Roast-duck dinner together (included).
Beijing
A day to be a Beijinger. Morning at the Temple of Heaven among residents walking, exercising and chatting. Then local food and street life, and a market visit after a short lesson in useful Mandarin phrases.
Great Wall area
Sleep beside the Wall. Leave central Beijing for the Great Wall near Gubeikou. Walk a section chosen for the group's comfort, with time to pause and take in the landscape. Evening in a courtyard-style guesthouse with a home-style dinner (included) and dumpling-making together. Travel with an overnight bag; large luggage stays in Beijing.
Beijing
Return without rushing. Tai Chi session of about 20–30 minutes, breakfast, then a relaxed return to Beijing. A Chinese massage is included, and the rest of the day is open.
Chengdu
Arrive in Chengdu. Do less. Notice more. Fly to Chengdu (flight included). Contemporary life around Taikoo Li, the older Daci Temple, tea, then a shared Sichuan dinner (included) and one social experience chosen with your host (Sichuan opera, mahjong in a teahouse or a cooking lesson).
Dujiangyan
One icon, then into the landscape. Early start for the giant pandas, when they are most active. Continue to Dujiangyan, an ancient water-control system still part of local life, then on to Qingcheng Mountain for a peaceful hotel or retreat and a group dinner (included).
Qingcheng
A full slow day. Forest paths, Taoist heritage and an organised tea experience. Routes can be shortened and breaks built in. This is not a strenuous hike.
Sichuan
Meet a maker, then change cities. A hands-on morning with a practitioner of a living craft (Shu embroidery or lacquer and mother-of-pearl). Afternoon high-speed train to Chongqing and an easy first evening.
Chongqing
Understand the vertical city. Move through the city as locals do: hills, stairways, lifts, rail and river crossings. Depending on the route and local access, the day may include Liziba, the Yangtze cable car, Hongyadong or the historic underground spaces. In the evening, a private cultural performance (about 45–60 minutes) in an atmospheric heritage setting.
Chongqing
Living city, then hot spring. Morning in Chongqing's neighbourhoods, markets and food. Afternoon at a hot spring in the Beibei/Jingangbei area, with a local wellness treatment. Farewell dinner together (included).
Chongqing
Easy morning, farewell China. A relaxed breakfast, perhaps a last bowl of noodles or tea nearby, and a scheduled group airport transfer.
