Go deeper Want the full story behind this journey?

New York at the turn of the year is loud everywhere except where it counts —
so we go looking for what still moves. A ferry crossing at first light, into
open harbor, before the crowds arrive. A bridge crossed on foot, in the cold,
skyline rising ahead of you the whole way. A Sunday morning uptown that
answers to nothing but itself.

We stay in Downtown Brooklyn, close enough to Manhattan to reach it in
minutes, far enough to end each day somewhere calmer than where it began.
On New Year's Eve, dinner unfolds on the DUMBO waterfront beneath the
Manhattan Bridge, followed by a short walk to watch New York's real
fireworks — the ones that burst over the harbor near the Statue of Liberty,
skyline and bridges lit up as backdrop, no ticket and no crowd required.

Days move between the city's essential icons — the Statue of Liberty and
Ellis Island, the Museum of Modern Art, the High Line, a sunset from one of
the tallest buildings in the world — and its quieter corners: a Sunday
gospel service in Harlem, a rooftop at golden hour, a soul food brunch. The
icon stays. The way you meet it changes.

As night falls, dinner at a DUMBO waterfront restaurant beneath the Manhattan Bridge, followed by a short walk to watch New York's real fireworks — bursting over the harbor near the Statue of Liberty, the whole skyline lit up as backdrop.

A slow start to the new year — no early alarms. Brunch inside the Museum of Modern Art overlooking the sculpture garden, an afternoon in the museum itself, then One World Observatory at dusk as the city's lights come on below. For those who want more, an evening of bouldering at a Brooklyn climbing gym is on offer.

On foot across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan, the skyline rising ahead the whole way. A private walking tour with a local historian through the High Line, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, a brief stop at Times Square along the way, then back across the river for golden-hour drinks on a Brooklyn rooftop overlooking Manhattan.

A Harlem morning: a guided walk through Strivers Row and Sugar Hill, a real Sunday gospel service, and a soul food brunch. The afternoon is left quiet and open — the ideal window for those who've booked the optional helicopter flight over Manhattan.
