Tanzania’s Wild Heart: Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Tanzania's northern circuit is the archetype of the African safari, and for good reason. This journey has been designed to move through its three most iconic ecosystems at a deliberately unhurried pace: the elephant-rich plains of Tarangire, three full days deep inside the Serengeti itself, and the primordial crater of Ngorongoro. The journey begins in Arusha, gateway to the northern safari circuit, with arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to an elegant retreat at the foot of Mount Meru. A relaxed first evening — a welcome briefing, dinner with the group, and a good night's sleep — sets the tone before the adventure begins in earnest the next morning.

From Arusha, the route heads to Tarangire National Park, home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania and the largest density of elephants on the continent. Ancient baobabs punctuate a landscape where lion prides, buffalo herds and extraordinary birdlife gather along the seasonal river, with a picnic lunch taken in the bush. The night is spent at a boutique hideaway among the coffee plantations of Karatu, where the pace slows and the views already stretch toward the crater highlands.

The heart of the journey is three consecutive days in the Serengeti — not a single night passing through, but three full days living inside the park itself. Entering via the eastern corridor, the first day is spent acclimatising to the sheer scale of the plains: open grassland, granite kopjes rising from the savannah, and the first encounters with giraffe, topi and the ever-present herds of zebra and wildebeest. Day two moves to the Seronera Valley, the beating heart of the ecosystem and one of the best places on Earth for predator sightings, where leopards rest in acacia branches and lion prides patrol the open plains — depending on the season, this stretch can fall directly in the path of the Great Migration's river crossings. A final day pushes north to the quieter plains for a change of scenery: cheetah on open grass, hippo pods in the Mara River's tributaries, and vast herds moving with the rains, closing with an evening game drive chasing the last light. Throughout, the group stays at an intimate lodge set right within the park boundaries — no transfers to interrupt the immersion, just sundowners and dinner after each day's drive.

From the Serengeti, the journey descends into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife theatres: a self-contained ecosystem within an inactive volcanic caldera, home to black rhino, dense lion populations and vast flamingo-lined soda lakes. A picnic lunch is taken on the crater floor before returning for a final evening at the same boutique hideaway in the Karatu highlands.

The journey ends where the safari began: a transfer back to Kilimanjaro International Airport, with travellers on later flights able to opt for a complimentary walking tour of Arusha and its central market.
